When It’s Good To Be Part of the Herd

February 10, 2010 by: Randall

Herd of BuffaloBeing ‘part of the herd’ has a dubious reputation.  But there are herds we probably wouldn’t mind being a part of- successful people, happy people, fit people.  In this case ‘Herd’ is referring to a group(or network) of people, of course.  While such networks have always existed, the advent of scalable technology to mirror them through online social networks (you know the ones- Facebook, myspace, LinkedIn) has been a researcher’s dream.  And the studies have flowed forth, depicting an even more stark picture of social influence than your mother would have led you to believe when admonishing you to not hang around with the wrong crowd.  Continue Reading

The hidden (and not so hidden) benefits of exercise

NYT Article on fitness and health imageExercise is good for us and natural- this is something which has been ingrained upon us through teaching and first hand experience and is something which I personally take for granted.  Most people reading this probably fall into the same category of those who recognize the benefits of exercise.  However, it’s always interesting to find additional, secondary or hidden benefits to reinforce that which we hold true.  A recent crop of articles on exercise has done just that, uncovering additional benefits of working out hard and effectively through short duration exercises.

The Wall Street Journal reports that studies show those who exercise regularly get sick with colds or flus less oftenContinue Reading

Remember to Breathe

Take a deep breath image

You may have noticed that almost every exercise on Mobilenetworkout.com includes words like breathe, or exhale, then do the exercise.  Of course if we didn’t breathe we would be in big trouble, but putting consciousness to our breathing actually has a lot of benefit.  First of all, slow, deep breathing allows more oxygen to get into the bloodstream in order to power our muscles.  But it also slows the heart rate, can lower blood pressure slightly and calms us down, so we are more able to focus. resolutionsThe holidays are coming!  The season of joy and giving is upon us and we are about to pick up the pace in our already busy lives.  As our calendars fill up our stress level responds accordingly.  And quickly on the heels of this hustle and bustle comes the 31st of December and New Year’s Resolutions.  As the date draws closer, the communal conversation about resolutions, (what will they be this year, what were last year’s, how did you do, do you even remember them?) reaches a fever pitch.  Continue Reading

LuluLemon Clothes Make Me Want to Workout!

Lululemon MobileNetWorkout DemoA few weeks ago we spent a day at LuluLemon in Santa Barbara promoting MobileNetWorkout. As people shopped for their ultra-cute workout wear, we tried our best to entice them to do a one-minute workout right there on the spot, to see for themselves that a one minute exercise truly can be a work out.

The results were interesting. Shoppers fell into three categories. The first, and my favorites, were the eager participants. Getting into a gift certificate drawing for Lulu was un-necessary motivation Continue Reading

Acorn Squash awaiting stuffingHere is a meal you can count on for nutrient density without compromising flavor, health goals, or your schedule. It takes about 30 minutes, but the interactive time is low since the squash just bakes in the oven so you can multi-task while you make this meal.
Stuffed Acorn Squash with quinoa, goat cheese, chopped walnuts and pumpkin seeds. Roasted bell peppers and sauteed kale on the side:

Plank Hold is Awesome!

November 13, 2009 by: Kris

When you do a plank and you hold it for a minute or so you are getting so much muscle work in one single exercise.  This is probably one of the best of the core muscle group exercises.  The core is the center of the body from which all movements originate.  With the plank hold exercise you work the shoulder blade/upper back area, all the abdominals, the spinal muscles, the legs and the arms – all in one.  No wonder it is so hard!  But don’t you feel powerful when you are doing it and don’t you feel cocky when you complete it??  I do!  Go for it now!

How to Stretch or When to Stretch?

To stretch or not to stretch

We don’t stretch enough.  By ‘we’ I’m referring to the royal we… okay, I don’t stretch enough.  But I do recognize this deficiency in my fitness routine.

Everywhere you look, there is advice on how to stretch.  The Mayo Clinic gives stretching advice just like you received in grade school.   It’s the Mayo Clinic so they must know what they’re talking about, right?  And they might but there are other reliable sources which say to stretch like a penguin or even not to stretch.  The smart folks at Yale expound the benefits of dynamic stretching.  For many athletes, flexibility seems to be the desired result, and the methods of achieving this can be varied.

Since there seems to be mass confusion about how to stretch Continue Reading
